Happiness is...

I seem to remember having this book when I was a child called Happiness is a Warm Puppy. I'd honestly all but forgotten about it until today. Apparently it's gone out of print now, but I found myself thinking today that Happiness is a Snoring Bulldog.

I only bring it up because we now have a warm puppy in our house and it is definately one of the happiest feelings I can imagine. He's a seven month old bulldog named Quickly. He's our dog, but he's admittedly mostly Dirk's dog. He's wanted this dog for a decade or more. He's even had the name picked out. We recently found a house that we are very seriously thinking about buying and so discussion (of course) turned to DOG. I adore dogs... just about all of them, so while I've historically been more about my animals picking me, I've always admired my husband for knowing exactly what he wants in a pet dog.

We found this guy's breeder via an online referral service and just thought we would put our name on their list for an upcoming litter. It turned out that they would likely have a litter ready around the end of September, which likely would have been perfect timing, but then she told me about this other little guy they had, who they hoped would be a "show dog". Unfortunately for them (but fortunately for us!) he grew a couple inches too long, which effectively made him useless as a show dog and they didn't need another "stud", so they were willing to part with him for a very reasonable price and we couldn't resist jumping at the chance. The best part is that he's still a puppy, but appears to be past the chewing-everything-in-sight phase AND is crate/potty trained.

We've only had him home for a day, but he is just awesome. I don't know if all bulldogs are like this, but he is the most laid back, easy going dog we've ever known. He makes a variety of noises that some people might find unappealing, but we think they're adorable.

Vive la Quickly!

I can't believe it's been so long since I've updated. I'm married now, which is crazy. Since my last post, we've been on and returned from our honeymoon and I've started a new job. It's very exciting! I am selling beer for a small, specialty distributor out of Austin for San Antonio and the surrounding areas. I have a lot to learn, but I'm totally up for it. Besides, what could be so bad about selling some of the finest beers available in Texas? They're very lucky to have found me (or, that I found them). :)

If you have cats, you simply must get them one of these catnip filled banana treats.

These treats claim to be filled with "the most potent catnip in the world" and I totally believe it. They sold them at my Seattle petstore, but I haven't been able to find them in San Antonio, so I tend to stock up on them when I'm up there. I suppose I could buy them online, but they are a special occasion kind of treat. My cats literally go nuts for these things. I broke a fresh one out this morning and Winona has torn the thing open at the seams to get at the goods inside. When I was younger, we would hold new dog toys back from our dog because he would have the thing torn apart within an hour or two -- or in minutes if it had one of those squeakers in it.

Even though I worked in a bakery for more years than I care to remember, I've never been good with anything involving yeast (except for brewing beer, of course!), so we were pretty much prepared for a complete fiasco, but actually got beautiful, tasty donuts!

We used Alton Brown's recipe for yeast donuts, donut glaze, and chocolate donut glaze from the Circle of Life episode.

This was a really fun and satisfying to spend a Saturday morning as newlyweds, two days before taking off for our honeymoon, and one hell of a way to break in the fryer. :)

Spent most of the day in bed today. I just felt so tired. Combine that with this freezing cold weather and I just couldn't be bothered. Today's highlight was definately watching Buena Vista Social Club though. It's one of those movies I've always wanted to see, but never got around to it. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm a sucker for a documentary, especially one about music. What a amazingly beautiful look into a world that most of us can only imagine. I was happy that they subtitled the lyrics because as I had suspected, they're mostly devastating. It's going to be one of those films who's story and characters haunt me for days and days.

In case you aren't tired of the Dick Cheney jokes yet...

This one's pretty good.

Cheney goes ahead with Folsom Prison concert

Vice President Dick "Buckshot" Cheney kept his word to the inmates at California's maximum security Folsom State Prison. He played a one hour set with his band "Dickie and The Trigger Happy Birdie Killers". The set received a luke warm reception until Cheney launched into his new, as yet unreleased, single "Go Fuck Yourself". During the guitar solo the Vice President thrilled the assembled audience by producing a rifle and opening fire. "He seems angry. Very angry" one inmate said "I mean, I always thought that the American people didn't like to vote for angry people but...Man, that dude is angry!" I managed to obtain a tape of the performance and am proud to present it here....

60 days and counting...

Wedding invitations went out this morning.

Ceremony has been written.

Bachelorette weekend is on the calendar.

Woot!!!

Wow, this thing is really coming together all of a sudden.

I'm really looking forward to getting some rsvp's back because as of right now, the number I've based the caterer, etc. on was pretty much completely made up. At this point I just really don't feel like I have any idea who's going to come out of the woodwork or won't be able to make it.

It's all so exciting. I never would have thought I'd get so wrapped up in this, but here I am and I'm loving every minute of it. I'd never want to be a wedding planner by trade, but I could definately see being a professional party planner.

At the same time, as much as I am looking forward to our big party, I'm more excited to get on with the rest of it.

Dig the new icon.

I had my first wedding-related dream/nightmare the other night. Basically, I'd done nothing more than what I've done today and the wedding day was upon us. So I was wearing a dress that hasn't been fitted, I didn't have shoes, Dirk didn't have his suit yet, and we hadn't even written the ceremony. I don't know why I always seem to have these dreams where I run out of time or don't properly plan. Before a trip I took with my Mom last year, I had several dreams leading up to it where I didn't have enough time to pack and had like the same pair or shorts and two tshirts to wear for the entire time we were down there.

So bizarre, but I suppose it's par for the course and the first of many. Funny because I don't feel particularly stressed, although there are a few things I feel a little under the gun about. First and foremost is losing a few much needed pounds. At this point, the holidays did me in and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even be able to zip my dress today if it came down to it, which is not a good feeling. But we are on a pretty hardcore diet now, so I'm not overly worried about it. The second thing is the ceremony. I know. How hard can it actually be to come up with a secular 15 minute ceremony? Not very, but the task is still a little daunting. I continue to check things off my little list though, so we are definately making progress. Invitations are being sent out in just a little over three weeks, which is very exciting!
